Power Secrets of the Pros

Boyd Summerhays

PGA Tour instructor Boyd Summerhays builds his system for maximizing power on how the longest drivers get it done—and how you can, too.

3:27

How to Generate Speed

One major key to creating clubhead speed is getting your body in the correct position through impact. The best players in the world use the body to create power; a lot of amateurs freeze the body and swing hard with the hands and arms. In this video, teacher Boyd Summerhays demonstrates how to properly move through the ball, using PGA Tour player J.B. Holmes as an example.

The Power Setup

Developing a full turn through impact to generate clubhead speed is an important start, but you need to set up to the ball properly to maximize that power. Here, Boyd Summerhays details how to get into the correct stance and why it’s important for making a powerful strike. Tour player Tony Finau exemplifies the power setup.

The Pro Draw

How do the pros hit such beautiful, high draws when most golfers can’t shake that slice or low hook? It’s all about getting the clubface and swing path synced up at impact. In this video, Boyd Summerhays offers an alignment strategy to help you hit the pro draw. Looking for some tour inspiration? Check out Rory McIlroy’s swing.

The No. 1 Power Source

You might think power comes from swinging for the fences. But a critical factor that many overlook is keeping your muscles free of tension. Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, two of the greatest athletes of our time, had routines for staying loose before big races. Likewise in golf, speed comes when you’re nice and relaxed. Boyd Summerhays details how to let power happen naturally.

Power Fails

We all want longer drives, but that desire can cause us to do things that might feel powerful but really aren’t. In this video, Boyd Summerhays shows how to avoid the moves that sap power from your swing. The tour player to emulate is Adam Scott, who hits massive drives with a fundamentally sound and exceptionally fluid swing.
